The festive energy at the Maracanã Stadium reached its peak right from the opening minute of play.

However, Panama — currently ranked 33rd in the FIFA Rankings and also preparing for the upcoming World Cup — were in no mood to simply play along.

It was far from a straightforward first half in Sunday’s (31 May) international friendly, but Brazil went into the interval with a 2-1 advantage, led by an impressive performance from Vinicius Junior.

Brazil took the lead before even a minute had passed. Casemiro regained possession, and the No. 7 surged forward past Córdoba to slot home a superb finish.

Vinicius Junior continued to shine moments later as Brazil maintained control and kept pressing for more openings.

Panama, however, struck back from a set-piece. Michael Murillo delivered the free kick, Matheus Cunha made contact, and the ball deflected into the net in the 14th minute, completely wrong-footing the defence.

Brazil then had to work to unlock a determined and energetic opponent. In the 32nd minute, Ismael Díaz forced Alisson into a fine save, showing Panama’s attacking intent.

The tension eased for Brazil in the 39th minute. Another move involving the No. 7 led to a header from Casemiro, who celebrated his 11th goal of the season after a crucial deflection. The assistant referee initially flagged for offside, but VAR confirmed the goal.

Raphinha came close to extending the lead soon after, while at the other end, Waterman tested Alisson again during stoppage time, ensuring the first half ended on a competitive note.

This match serves as an important test for Brazil as they build towards the World Cup.

It’s also worth noting that a total of ELEVEN substitutions are permitted in this friendly, giving coach Carlo Ancelotti the opportunity to evaluate a wide range of players.

The substitutes’ bench includes: Weverton, Ederson, Danilo, Douglas Santos, Ibañez, Fabinho, Danilo Santos, Lucas Paquetá, Endrick, Igor Thiago, and Rayan.

Which players should be introduced at halftime? Fans are eager to share their thoughts.
