For many young footballers, joining Real Madrid as a teenager from another continent represents the ultimate dream. However, the reality of leaving your home at such a tender age and carrying the immense expectations that come with representing one of the world's biggest clubs can be a daunting experience.
For Brazilian sensation Endrick, making the switch from Sao Paulo to Madrid has brought its own set of challenges.
Although his time in the Spanish capital has already been marked by highs and lows, Endrick has found steady guidance and support from one important figure at the club.
England international Jude Bellingham, perhaps more than most, understands the pressure of relocating abroad at a young age. The Stourbridge-born midfielder was only 17 when he left Birmingham City to join Borussia Dortmund in a £25 million move to the Bundesliga giants back in 2020.
After enjoying three impressive seasons in Germany, Bellingham, still just 19, was signed by Real Madrid for €103 million. He quickly established himself as a pivotal player at the Santiago Bernabéu and became an ideal role model for the club’s new generation of talented recruits.
“He’s a great man and a great friend,” Endrick told FourFourTwo when speaking about his bond with Bellingham. “On my first day at the club, he came up to me, asked how I was doing, and whether I liked the city.”
Endrick added, “One of the best things about Jude is how much effort he puts into adapting to wherever he lives. He already speaks a bit of Spanish.”
“When I first arrived, he didn’t speak much, but he still made an effort to make me feel comfortable. Over time, I improved my English, and we started communicating more easily.”
Despite making an impressive start by scoring on both his La Liga and Champions League debuts, Endrick’s journey in Spain hasn’t been entirely smooth. A hamstring injury last summer sidelined him for a period, and he later found it difficult to break into the team under Xabi Alonso during the first half of the campaign.
In January, he secured a loan move to Lyon, where he has rediscovered his form, scoring six goals and providing five assists in 14 appearances — performances that earned him a recall to the Brazil national team.
The teenager credits Bellingham for helping him stay positive during the tougher moments of his early career. “When I wasn’t playing much, I talked to him about my future, and he told me to do what was best for my career,” Endrick said. “We still keep in touch. Everyone knows how incredible he is as a player, but he’s also a great person who is always there for his friends.”
He concluded, “I’m really grateful to him for the way he welcomed me to Real Madrid and for the friendship that we continue to build.”
