Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday described the capture of the historic Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon as a “dramatic shift” in Israel’s military campaign against Hezbollah, as Israeli troops expanded operations deeper into Lebanese territory despite an existing ceasefire arrangement.

In a video statement released after Israeli forces took control of the strategic hilltop fortress, Netanyahu said the operation marked a turning point in Israel’s approach toward Hezbollah and its military presence along the northern border.

“Today, we have returned to Beaufort in a different way. We have returned united, determined, and stronger than ever,” Netanyahu said. He added that the seizure of the castle represented “a dramatic stage and a dramatic shift” in Israel’s policy and military strategy.

The medieval Beaufort Castle, known locally as Qalaat al-Shaqif, overlooks large parts of southern Lebanon and northern Israel. Military analysts have long considered the site one of the most strategically significant positions in the region because of its elevated terrain and commanding view of surrounding areas.

According to the Israeli military, troops captured the fortress after days of fighting around the Beaufort Ridge and nearby villages. The operation marks Israel’s deepest military incursion into Lebanon in more than 26 years and comes amid intensifying clashes with Hezbollah.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed that forces had crossed areas north of the Litani River and indicated that newly captured positions could remain under Israeli control as part of an expanded security zone. The Israeli military also issued evacuation warnings for civilians in areas south of the Zahrani River as operations continued.

The latest offensive has raised fears of a broader regional escalation. France has reportedly requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, while Lebanese officials accused Israel of violating Lebanese sovereignty and further destabilising the region.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has intensified since March, with both sides exchanging missile, drone and artillery attacks. Thousands of people have been displaced on both sides of the border, while casualties continue to rise amid repeated violations of the ceasefire announced earlier this year.

The capture of Beaufort Castle carries symbolic significance as well. Israel previously occupied the fortress during its military presence in southern Lebanon before withdrawing from the area in 2000. The return of Israeli troops to the site is being viewed as one of the most significant developments in the current conflict.

As diplomatic efforts continue ahead of planned talks involving regional and international stakeholders, the situation on the ground remains volatile, with military activity showing little sign of slowing.
