Legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has taken a swipe at Arsenal, labelling their performance ‘boring’ following their defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday night.
The North London side went ahead early in the first half through Kai Havertz but chose to sit deep for most of the game, forcing the French champions to find a breakthrough.
Ousmane Dembele eventually levelled the score from the penalty spot midway through the second half after Arsenal defender Cristhian Mosquera fouled Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the box.
After 120 minutes, the match remained tied, sending it to penalties. Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes missed their spot-kicks, allowing PSG to clinch a 4-3 victory in the shoot-out.
Ferguson, unimpressed by Arsenal’s approach — the Gunners had less than 25 percent possession across the full 120 minutes — reportedly sent a message to PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, according to French outlet L’Equipe.
In his congratulatory note, Ferguson allegedly wrote: “Nasser, this is Alex Ferguson. Well done, it was a tough night for you, but you played against a boring team that did nothing but defend. Enjoy your holidays, you deserve it.”
Former Scotland international Craig Burley also criticised Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s tactics, arguing that his side retreated far too early after taking the lead.
Speaking on ESPN, Burley said: “Let’s be honest, when they scored after six minutes, they tried to defend their way to the 90th minute. If PSG had scored after six minutes, they would have kept attacking, probing, and trying to win the match. That’s the difference in how these two teams see football.”
“Arsenal sat back trying to defend for 84 minutes plus stoppage time. That’s incredibly difficult to sustain. It was a brave effort from Arsenal, but football-wise, even when PSG weren’t at their best, they were clearly the stronger team.”
Burley went on to add: “Three times from kick-off they just lumped the ball forward like it was a rugby match. That’s embarrassing. That’s 1980s English football. Honestly, it’s outdated.”
Former Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri suggested that the Gunners’ time-wasting tactics in the first half ended up affecting how the referee treated them in the second half.
Speaking on Canal+’s Late Football Club, Nasri commented: “In the second half, the referee systematically blew against Arsenal. He punished them for wasting time during the first half.”
