Wolfsburg set for sweeping changes after first-ever Bundesliga relegation

After 29 uninterrupted seasons in the Bundesliga, VfL Wolfsburg have suffered relegation from Germany’s top division for the first time in their history. The club’s fate was sealed on Monday night after a 2-1 extra-time playoff loss against SC Paderborn.

With the worst possible scenario now a reality for the Volkswagen-backed side, the repercussions are expected to be far-reaching.

As early as March, Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume had indicated that, considering VfL Wolfsburg’s disappointing campaign and the automaker’s own financial challenges, the company’s involvement with the club would be “put under review”.

A detailed evaluation of the recently concluded season, along with preparations for the upcoming 2. Bundesliga campaign, is now planned. However, the club’s leadership cannot afford to delay decisions, with several critical issues to resolve and a crucial transfer window approaching.

The squad is anticipated to undergo major restructuring. Although most player contracts remain valid in the 2. Bundesliga and relegation clauses will cut salaries by about 35 percent, many players will still be too costly to keep for second-tier football – even if they wish to remain.

Players such as Mohamed Amoura, Konstantinos Koulierakis, Kamil Grabara, Patrick Wimmer, and Christian Eriksen are almost certain to depart. Reports suggest that the club’s squad budget will be slashed from €80 million to €55 million.

There are also doubts surrounding the head coach and sporting managing director roles. Dieter Hecking, who took over as interim coach in March, faces an uncertain future at the helm.

“We’ll definitely sit down in the next day or two to review the ten weeks I’ve been in charge. I need some time to process everything first,” Hecking told Sky following Monday’s defeat to Paderborn.

Speculation has emerged that Hecking could be appointed as the new sporting managing director – a position left vacant since Peter Christiansen’s dismissal in March – though it remains unclear whether that plan will proceed after the team’s relegation.

Regardless of how the leadership situation unfolds, VfL Wolfsburg now face a summer filled with uncertainty and significant rebuilding following their painful drop from the Bundesliga.
