Liverpool have parted ways with Arne Slot after what turned out to be a disastrous campaign that completely derailed their title defence. The Reds ended the season fifth in the Premier League table, collecting only 60 points.
Despite the poor season, the club’s announcement still shocked many observers. Until just hours before the decision, Liverpool had maintained their public support for Slot. However, on Saturday morning, the Dutch coach was relieved of his duties.
The focus at Anfield now shifts to appointing a new head coach. AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as the leading candidate to take charge at Liverpool.
According to Paul Joyce of The Times, the Merseyside club is preparing to begin formal discussions with the Spanish coach this week.
“Liverpool will begin formal talks with Andoni Iraola this week and are aiming to have Arne Slot’s successor appointed before the World Cup begins,” Joyce reported.
He further added: “Iraola is the frontrunner to replace Slot, who was dismissed on Saturday after two years in the job.”
It’s easy to see why Liverpool consider Iraola a strong choice. The Spaniard has guided AFC Bournemouth to European qualification for the first time in their history, finishing sixth in the Premier League this season.
Iraola’s high-intensity, pressing brand of football is also expected to resonate well with Liverpool supporters, who are eager to see their team play on the front foot again.
Another factor working in Iraola’s favour is his existing relationship with Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes, who had previously appointed and collaborated with him during their time together at Bournemouth. The two now seem poised for a reunion at Anfield.
