Fabrizio Romano has disclosed the reason behind the delay in Manchester United finalising their move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.
The Red Devils are preparing to build on their strong finish to the season under Michael Carrick by backing the new permanent head coach with key reinforcements in the transfer market.
Manchester United are expected to target at least two midfielders, a left-back and a left-winger to strengthen the squad as they prepare for next season’s UEFA Champions League campaign.
The club has been linked with several midfielders in recent weeks, but Atalanta’s Ederson now appears to be the leading candidate to become United’s first signing of the summer.
Following another impressive season in Serie A, Manchester United moved quickly to secure a deal for the Brazilian international, with personal terms already agreed.
While the deal has been close for the past couple of weeks, Romano has now revealed the specific factors causing the delay in completing Ederson’s transfer to Old Trafford.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained: “What’s happening now is quite technical. Atalanta have confirmed Cristiano Giuntoli as their new sporting director, and Maurizio Sarri will be taking over as manager.
“These are the people responsible for finalising the agreement with Manchester United. United have already reached an advanced stage in negotiations.
“Everything is settled on the player’s side, and the deal is just waiting for the final formalities. However, since Atalanta have new decision-makers in place, those administrative steps are taking a little longer.”
He further added: “United hope to wrap up the deal for around €40–45 million. They are currently working on the final touches, and unless something completely unexpected happens, Ederson will become a Manchester United player.”
Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel believes Ederson will add both physical presence and technical quality to the club’s midfield setup.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Schmeichel commented: “When you compare Ederson with many young midfielders across Europe, his balance stands out. Some are technically gifted but lack strength, while others are strong but limited in possession. Ederson offers both qualities.”
He continued: “He can win duels, carry the ball forward, press with intensity, and remain composed under pressure. That blend of attributes is rare. I also admire his mentality – he plays with determination and character, which Manchester United need more of in their midfield.”
“When you watch him against top European sides, he never hides. That’s crucial because Old Trafford demands players who can handle pressure. In my view, he has all the attributes needed to thrive in the Premier League and particularly at Manchester United.”
