New Delhi. Iran is going to take a step today which may impact global oil trade and maritime trade. Voting is to be held in the Iranian Parliament on a bill to formally give legal status to the management of the Strait of Hormuz. It is believed that if this proposal is passed, Iran will try to further strengthen its control over this strategic waterway.

Aleddin Salimi, a member of the presiding board of the Iranian parliament, told semi-official news agency Tasnim that lawmakers are nearing a final decision on legislating the management of the Strait of Hormuz. He said that only Iran and Oman have the right to operate this waterway.

According to Salimi, talks have also started with Oman on this issue and positive signals have been received at the initial level. He expressed hope that a formal arrangement could soon be made between the two countries.

On the other hand, Iran’s military headquarters has also claimed that Iranian armed forces are in complete control over the Strait of Hormuz. According to the official news agency IRNA, Iran said that all commercial ships and oil tankers will have to use only those sea routes that Iran will determine. Besides, they will also have to take permission from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy.

The Iranian military has warned that if any military ship tries to interfere in the management of the Strait of Hormuz or disrupt traffic, it will respond. On the other hand, the claims of America and Iran are completely different from each other. Iranian media says that despite President Donald Trump claiming to lift the blockade, Iranian ships are still facing difficulties in passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

At the same time, the US-led Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) has said in its latest notice that the blockade of Iranian ports is still in force. The organization warned that ships that do not follow the restrictions could be stopped or action could be taken against them.
