Arsenal have moved a step closer to lifting their maiden UEFA Champions League trophy after Kai Havertz found the net in the first half.
The Gunners got off to an ideal start in the final against Paris Saint-Germain, breaking the deadlock within the opening six minutes. From that point on, Mikel Arteta’s men managed to keep Luis Enrique’s side largely at bay for the rest of the first period.
However, the flow of the match could have been quite different had two handball incidents gone against Arsenal instead of in their favour.
In the build-up to the opening goal, Marquinhos’ attempted clearance hit Leandro Trossard’s arm before the ball deflected into the path of Havertz, who converted the chance. Despite appeals from PSG players, the referee allowed play to continue and the goal stood.
Roughly ten minutes later, Bukayo Saka’s attempt to clear the ball ricocheted onto his own arm inside the box. Once again, the officials decided not to award a penalty. The referee, positioned close to the incident, opted not to penalise it, and VAR did not intervene either.
These moments have sparked debate among fans and pundits alike — did the referee make the correct calls on both occasions?
