When Diego Forlan joined Manchester United in January 2002, he stepped into one of the most star-studded football teams in the world.
The Uruguayan striker was just 22 years old when he made the switch to Europe, signing for the Red Devils in a £6.9 million transfer from Argentine club Independiente. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side had successfully beaten Middlesbrough to secure his signature.
His new teammates included David Beckham and members of the famous Class of ’92, with Cristiano Ronaldo arriving at Old Trafford the following year in the summer of 2003.
Sharing the dressing room with Beckham, already a global superstar by this stage, left a lasting impression on Forlan.
“Beckham was a global phenomenon,” Forlan told FourFourTwo. “Not only because of how talented he was on the pitch, but also because he was dating a Spice Girl.”
He continued, “It was like travelling with a Hollywood star. Despite all the attention surrounding him, he remained an exceptional professional.”
Ronaldo was only 18 when Manchester United paid £12 million for the young winger, shortly after his standout performance for Sporting in a friendly against the English club.
The Portuguese talent was just beginning his journey towards becoming one of the sport’s all-time greats, but Forlan remembers that his potential was evident from the very beginning.
“Ronaldo was just starting to make his mark back then,” Forlan said, reflecting on the five-time future Ballon d’Or winner’s early days at Old Trafford.
“He was determined to conquer the world and was remarkable for both his physical strength and technical ability,” he added, highlighting the mindset that impressed everyone within the squad.
“Above all, it was his ambition to be the best and his constant hunger for improvement.”
While his teammates recognised Ronaldo’s immense talent, the young winger himself was certain of the heights he would reach in football.
“He was already very good, but I think only he truly believed he would become a legendary footballer,” Forlan concluded.
