Why are Delhi residents facing water shortage? AAP stages dramatic ‘Matka Phor’ protes

The Aam Aadmi Party on Friday staged a “Matka Phor” protest in several parts of Delhi against the alleged water shortage in the national capital, accusing the BJP-led administration of failing to ensure adequate water supply during the peak summer season.

Party leaders and workers gathered carrying earthen pots and raised slogans against the government, alleging that residents across multiple colonies are struggling with irregular water supply amid soaring temperatures and heatwave conditions in the city. During the protest, demonstrators smashed clay pots on roads as a symbolic expression of public anger over the ongoing water crisis.

AAP leaders claimed the situation has worsened in several residential areas where people are allegedly dependent on water tankers and private suppliers for daily needs. The party alleged that water availability has declined under the current administration despite repeated complaints from residents.

Addressing the protest, party functionaries accused the BJP government of failing to manage Delhi’s water infrastructure and not taking timely measures to deal with increased summer demand. Protesters also claimed that many areas are receiving water supply for only limited hours each day, forcing residents to store water amid uncertainty.

The demonstrations took place as Delhi continues to battle intense summer heat, with temperatures in several parts of the city remaining significantly above normal over recent days. Heatwave conditions and rising demand for water have increased pressure on civic infrastructure across the capital.

The BJP has not immediately issued a detailed response to Friday’s protest. However, political confrontation over water supply has remained a recurring issue between the BJP and AAP in Delhi, especially during the summer months when complaints of shortages increase across residential colonies and unauthorized settlements.

In previous years, disputes over water management, tanker supply, Yamuna water sharing and infrastructure maintenance have frequently triggered political blame games between rival parties in the national capital.

Residents in parts of outer Delhi, east Delhi and unauthorized colonies have often reported low water pressure and dependence on tanker services during peak summer periods. Civic authorities generally attribute seasonal shortages to rising consumption, falling groundwater levels and increased pressure on distribution networks.

The latest protest also comes amid broader concerns over extreme weather conditions affecting several north Indian states. The India Meteorological Department has issued repeated heatwave warnings in recent days, prompting authorities to advise people to stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary exposure during afternoon hours.

AAP leaders said the party would continue to raise the issue until water supply conditions improve across affected areas of Delhi
