New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday said the party leadership has not yet received any formal proposal regarding the composition of the new Karnataka Cabinet under Chief Minister-designate DK Shivakumar.

Speaking to reporters, Kharge indicated that discussions on government formation are still underway and greater clarity is expected only after Shivakumar’s swearing-in ceremony scheduled for June 3.

“We will have to wait. No proposal has come yet. Once it comes, discussions will take place regarding the number of ministers, deputy chief ministers and whether important party positions should also be filled simultaneously,” Kharge said.

Cabinet Expansion May Happen in Phases

Kharge also hinted that the Cabinet formation process could take place in phases, depending on the CM-designate’s final plan. According to him, the Congress leadership is yet to be informed about the possible size of the first batch of ministers.

“Whether he appoints eight or ten ministers initially, we do not know yet. One phase may happen first, while the remaining positions could be filled after 15 days or a month,” he said.

The remarks come amid intense political discussions within the Karnataka Congress over ministerial berths and key organizational appointments following the leadership transition in the state.

Discussions Underway on Balancing Aspirants

Responding to questions about accommodating senior leaders and aspirants within the government structure, Kharge said internal discussions are ongoing but no final formula has been approved yet.

“There are talks that some leaders can be adjusted in the second phase. Discussions are happening, but no concrete proposal has reached us so far,” he said. The Congress leadership is expected to focus on balancing regional representation, caste equations and factional interests while finalizing the Cabinet.

New KPCC Chief to Be Decided Soon

Kharge also confirmed that the party would soon begin the process of selecting a new Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president once Shivakumar formally assumes office as chief minister.

“That is natural. Once the current president steps down, another leader will have to take charge. We are looking for the right person and the right combination,” he said.

Emphasizing the need to strengthen the organization ahead of future electoral battles, Kharge said the party requires a leader capable of working quickly and maintaining unity within the state unit. “We now have around 24 months. The party needs someone who can work fast and bring everyone together collectively,” he added.
