Pep Guardiola has officially brought an end to his iconic reign at Manchester City, concluding a decade of dominance at the Etihad Stadium with an incredible haul of 20 trophies. As the Catalan mastermind prepares for a brief sabbatical, speculation is already swirling about where his managerial journey will take him next. Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez believes that after conquering club football across Spain, Germany, and England, Guardiola’s next chapter will likely unfold on the international stage.
The international ambition
Xavi seems convinced he knows what lies ahead for his former mentor. According to him, club football might no longer provide the kind of challenge Guardiola thrives on. Speaking during a Q&A session hosted by Heineken before the Champions League final, Xavi was clear about what he expects next in Guardiola’s career.
“He’s a genius, and you never really know what’s going on in the mind of a genius or what he’ll choose to do next. But if I have to guess, maybe he’s waiting for a national team,” Xavi said. “When it comes to clubs, he’s achieved everything, so I think his next challenge will be managing a national side.”
Could it be the Three Lions?
The idea of Guardiola stepping into international management has long intrigued fans and pundits alike. Xavi was specifically asked whether England or Spain could realistically be on the cards. Considering Guardiola’s strong connection with English football and his admiration for the quality of players available under Thomas Tuchel’s stewardship, the England job could be an enticing prospect. Having coached many of the current England internationals during his time at City, Guardiola would bring familiarity and insight few others could match. When asked whether Spain or England might be his next stop, Xavi responded, “Why not? Spain would be difficult, but maybe England.”
A managerial icon
Xavi, who played under Guardiola during Barcelona’s golden era, continues to hold immense respect for his former coach’s tactical brilliance. Despite the rise of new managerial talents, Guardiola, now 55, remains the standard-bearer for modern football excellence.
“If he’s not the best, he’s definitely among the best,” Xavi commented. “He’s obsessed with tactics, and I learned so much from him and his staff. He’s an incredible coach — the way he communicates with players and convinces them of what’s needed for the team is exceptional. He’s a legend in coaching.”
The end of an era
Although Guardiola’s contract was set to run for another year, the former Barcelona boss felt it was the right moment to step down, with Enzo Maresca expected to take over the managerial role. Guardiola is likely to assume a new position as a global ambassador for the City Football Group, but his immediate priority is rest and recovery. Much like the sabbatical he took after departing Barcelona in 2012, the 55-year-old plans to spend valuable time with his family before deciding on his next move in football.
