MAKASSAR – Lionel Messi is once again entrusted with leading Argentina in the 2026 World Cup.
Head of the South Sulawesi Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Amson Padolo, expressed strong confidence that Lionel Messi will guide La Albiceleste to another world title.
“Argentina will become champions because they are backed by top players from the best clubs,” Amson Padolo told reporters on Sunday (31 May 2026).
According to Padolo, the combination of a smart and capable coach, Messi’s leadership, and the experience of the squad as a cohesive unit is a winning formula.
“That’s their championship capital. Moreover, most of Argentina’s players are veterans from the previous World Cup,” he added.
Despite being 38 years old, Lionel Messi remains a sharp finisher in front of goal.
Even at this age, his magic on the pitch continues to shine.
In 2026, Messi has already scored 12 goals and provided 7 assists in 14 appearances for Inter Miami.
His prolific form in the United States remains impressive.
In 2025, Messi recorded 35 goals and 24 assists across 33 matches.
The former Barcelona star remains a vital figure for La Albiceleste.
Argentina indeed boasts a star-studded squad with players shining in their respective clubs.
Between the posts stands Aston Villa’s goalkeeper and captain, Emiliano Martinez.
Martinez recently helped Aston Villa win the Europa League and secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.
In defence, Argentina features Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez and Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero.
Veteran defenders Nicolas Otamendi and Nicolas Tagliafico are also part of the squad.
The midfield is equally strong, powered by Premier League duo Enzo Fernandez (Chelsea) and Mac Allister (Liverpool).
Rising star Nico Paz is expected to be a game-changer.
The Como 1907 midfielder recorded an impressive 12 goals and 6 assists this season.
He will be supported by experienced midfielders like Leandro Paredes and Rodrigo de Paul.
Up front, Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez leads the attack.
Lautaro has scored 17 goals and provided 6 assists in 30 matches.
Argentina can also rely on Julian Alvarez, the Atletico Madrid forward, who contributed 8 goals and 4 assists in 29 La Liga appearances.
Two Nations That Could Trouble Argentina
Amson Padolo mentioned two countries that could pose serious challenges to Argentina — France and Brazil.
France, or Les Bleus, arrive at the World Cup with a squad filled with star power.
Their defensive line includes William Saliba (Arsenal), Dayot Upamecano (Bayern Munich), Jules Kounde (Barcelona), Lucas Hernandez (PSG), Maxence Lacroix (Crystal Palace), and Malo Gusto (Chelsea).
In midfield, they have experienced players like Ngolo Kante (Fenerbahce), Adrien Rabiot (AC Milan), Zaire-Emery (PSG), and Aurelien Tchouameni (Real Madrid).
The attacking line is even more formidable, featuring Kylian Mbappe (Real Madrid), Michael Olise (Bayern Munich), Rayan Cherki (Manchester City), and Jean-Philippe Mateta (Crystal Palace).
PSG’s attacking trio of Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, and Bradley Barcola also add depth to the squad.
Padolo also warned about Brazil’s potential threat.
The Selecao, led by their veteran star Neymar, remain a powerhouse under coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker will guard the posts.
In defence, Brazil has Marquinhos (PSG), Gabriel (Arsenal), Bremer (Juventus), and Wesley (AS Roma).
The midfield is anchored by Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle United) and Casemiro (Manchester United).
Up front, they boast attacking talents such as Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid), Raphinha (Barcelona), Matheus Cunha (Manchester United), Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal), and the young sensation Endrick (Lyon).
“France and Brazil are both strong. Spain, on the other hand, still lacks the mentality of a champion,” said Amson Padolo.
Spain indeed arrive with a talented squad featuring young stars like Lamine Yamal.
Their midfield is packed with European top talents — Barcelona’s Pedri, Gavi, Pau Cubarsi, Ferran Torres, and Dani Olmo form the core.
Ballon d’Or winner Rodri (Manchester City) also strengthens the midfield lineup.
Other key players include Nico Williams (Athletic Bilbao), Fabian Ruiz (PSG), Mikel Oyarzabal (Real Sociedad), and Marc Cucurella (Chelsea).
However, despite their impressive roster, this Spanish squad is still seen as not quite ready to challenge for the title.
