New Delhi: Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in India on Saturday for his first overseas visit since assuming office, marking an important step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries.

The visit comes at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is expected to focus on a wide range of issues, including border security, trade, connectivity, and regional cooperation. President Min Aung Hlaing is leading a high-level delegation comprising cabinet ministers, senior officials, and business leaders.

According to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Myanmar President is scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi on June 1. The discussions are expected to address both strategic and economic priorities shared by the two nations.

Security and Border Management High on Agenda

With India and Myanmar sharing a 1,643-kilometre border, security cooperation is likely to feature prominently during the talks. India has expressed concerns over instability in Myanmar and its potential impact on security in India’s northeastern states.

Officials are expected to discuss measures to enhance border management, curb cross-border insurgency, and strengthen cooperation on regional security issues.

Expanding Economic Cooperation

Economic engagement is also expected to be a key focus of the visit. India is keen to expand trade and investment ties with Myanmar while improving access to critical minerals, including rare earth elements that are essential for electronics manufacturing and clean energy technologies.

Both sides are likely to explore opportunities to enhance connectivity projects and boost commercial cooperation.

MEA Highlights Strategic Importance of Myanmar

In a statement issued on May 28, the MEA described Myanmar as a vital partner in India’s Neighborhood First Policy, Act East Policy, and MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) initiative.

The ministry said the visit is expected to further deepen the longstanding relationship between the two countries and strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors.

During his stay, President Min Aung Hlaing will also visit Bodh Gaya and Mumbai for religious, business, and other engagements before concluding his trip.
