New Delhi: India has overtaken nations such as Germany, France, Japan, the UK, and Canada in the global race for digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) dominance. According to the latest ‘State of India’s Digital Economy 2026’ report, India has now emerged as the world’s fifth-largest digital economy.
Furthermore, in terms of AI performance, India now ranks fourth globally, trailing only the United States, China, and Singapore.
According to the ‘State of India’s Digital Economy’ (SIDE) 2026 report-released on Friday by the Center for Internet and Digital Economy at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER)-India has made a significant leap from its eighth-place ranking in 2025 to become the world’s fifth-largest digital economy. Concurrently, it holds the fourth position in the AI Index, following the United States, China, and Singapore.
India Ahead of Germany, France, Japan, and Canada
This achievement for India is the result of improvements in digital connectivity, Fintech development, and innovation capabilities. A study conducted across 71 countries, collectively accounting for 96% of the global GDP, reveals that India is significantly outpacing major developed economies, including Germany, France, Japan, and Canada, in terms of digital performance.
