Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon has finalised his much-anticipated move to Barcelona, putting pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Spanish champions.
Although Barcelona have not revealed the precise transfer amount, multiple reports indicate the deal is valued at £69.3million. The transfer marks a major financial gain for Newcastle, who had signed Gordon from Everton for £45million in January 2023.
Confirming the transfer, Barcelona issued an official statement on their club website: “FC Barcelona and Newcastle United have reached an agreement for Anthony Gordon to become a Blaugrana for the next five seasons.”
The 25-year-old England international had attracted interest from top European sides such as Bayern Munich but ultimately chose to join the Catalan club, having already faced them three times in last season’s Champions League campaign.
Gordon’s exit comes despite having four years remaining on a long-term contract he signed with Newcastle in 2024. Under manager Eddie Howe, he was instrumental in revitalising the team’s attacking play, forming a strong partnership with Alexander Isak — who himself completed a £130million move to Liverpool last summer.
Gordon played a crucial role in helping Newcastle end a 70-year wait for a major domestic title by winning last season’s Carabao Cup and also helped secure the club’s second Champions League qualification in three seasons.
His standout performances in Europe, where he scored 10 goals — including five from penalties — showcased his ability on the biggest stage. Before beginning his new chapter in LaLiga, he will focus on representing England in the upcoming World Cup finals.
In a message on Newcastle United’s official website, Eddie Howe shared his thoughts: “While we’re disappointed to lose Anthony from our squad, we understand this is a significant opportunity for him.
“He has been a huge part of our progress in recent years, and his development into an England international during his time here reflects his dedication and the collective support from everyone at the club.
“He leaves with our best wishes, and I’m confident he will succeed with both Barcelona and the national team at this year’s World Cup.”
Gordon’s arrival at the Nou Camp also casts uncertainty over the future of Manchester United’s on-loan striker Marcus Rashford, whose option for a permanent transfer is due to expire next month.
