Health experts say that good and complete sleep is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, getting adequate sleep daily is as important as eating right and exercising. According to the National Health Mission (NHM), continuous lack of sleep has a negative impact on the health of both body and mind.
The question is why is adequate sleep important? So health experts say, sleep is not just rest, but it is the basis of a healthy life. Good sleep repairs body cells, strengthens immunity, keeps the mind fresh and maintains energy throughout the day. One should take at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep daily.
Lack of sleep has a direct impact on health. First of all, fatigue and lethargy persist throughout the day. This reduces working capacity and increases stress. Prolonged lack of sleep can lead to uncontrolled weight gain as it affects the hormones that control appetite.
According to NHM, less sleep increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Blood pressure can become uncontrolled and heartbeat is affected. The risk of diabetes also increases manifold.
For good sleep, sleep and wake up at the same time every day, stay away from screens (mobile, TV) at night. Do light exercise but not right before bed, keep dinner light, sleep in a quiet and dark room. If you are constantly feeling sleepless or tired, then definitely consult a doctor.
