Ethanol Blended Petrol India: There is going to be a big change regarding petrol sales in India soon. In the coming time, customers will not only get normal petrol at petrol pumps but will also get the option of different ethanol mix petrol. According to the information, the Central Government is working rapidly on this scheme and can implement it soon.
Under this scheme, customers will be given the option to fill mixed petrol like E20, E22, E25 or E30 as per the capacity and compatibility of their vehicle’s engine. For this, the Central Government has asked the government oil companies as well as the private companies to prepare a necessary framework.
What is E20 petrol?
E20 petrol contains 20 percent ethanol and 80 percent petrol. Now, after the standards for mixtures are set by the Bureau of Indian Standards, the government is preparing to take it to the next level. Before this, the government has also brought a proposal to give permission to completely ethanol base vehicles.
People’s concern regarding ethanol mixed petrol
However, there are two major concerns among the people regarding ethanol mix petrol. The first concern is about mileage. Experts believe that the energy density of ethanol is lower than normal petrol, hence increasing its quantity in the fuel may reduce the mileage of the vehicle. However, the government claims that E20 fuel improves the performance and pickup of the vehicle and there is no major drop in mileage.
The second concern is about old engines. Petrol with high ethanol content can affect the rubber parts, pipes and plastic components of old vehicles. Ethanol absorbs moisture rapidly, increasing the risk of engine rust and failure.
Changes will be made in one lakh petrol pumps of the country
Under this new scheme of the government, changes will be made in about one lakh petrol pumps across the country. For petrol with different blends, new dispensing nozzles, underground storage tankers and blending control systems will have to be installed. However, experts say that this process will not be very expensive or complicated. Apart from this, customers will also have to be clearly informed at petrol pumps as to which petrol is available and what is its price.
According to the government, this step can prove beneficial from economic and environmental point of view. India has saved foreign exchange worth about Rs 1.7 lakh crore due to ethanol blending between November 2014 and February 2026. Besides, a huge reduction in carbon emissions has also been recorded. In view of the increasing ethanol production, the government now wants to benefit the farmers and the sugar industry by promoting alternatives like E22 and E30.
