Gujarat Titans (GT) has been termed by experts as a ‘predictable’ team. However, GT’s assistant coach Parthiv Patel has defended his attitude, citing the team’s consistently good performance since 2022. GT won the IPL title in its debut season in 2022. Since then, it has made it to the playoffs every time except the 2024 season. With the presence of Shubman Gill, Sai Sudarshan and Jos Buttler in the top order, the team has been quite effective with its traditional approach, while the openers of other teams are playing at a much higher strike rate.
The GT team will clash with Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the second qualifier on Friday (May 29). RR has Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who is making headlines with his batting at the age of 15. He is the leading run-scorer in the tournament with 680 runs and is batting at a strike rate of 242.85.
Parthiv replied to Tom Moody
Lucknow Super Giants’ Director of Cricket Tom Moody had said that GT’s fast bowlers Mohammad Siraj and Kagiso Rabada are more effective when the pitch helps them. A day before the match, Parthiv said that there is no need to change his attitude as he has finished in the top-2 in the league stage and he would not like to think too much about the defeat at the hands of Royal Challengers Bangalore in Qualifier 1.
Parthiv said on the eve of the match, ‘We were in a strong position at number two in the points table. I know other teams can think whatever they want. There are also six teams who could not qualify and I know the things you are referring to are what Tom Moody has said about Gujarat Titans but look we have finished second and we know the kind of cricket we want to play. We have confidence in ourselves that we will give good results.
He said, ‘Since the inception of Gujarat Titans, we have qualified four out of five years. The results are in front of everyone. Everyone has their own different way of playing. We have our own different style of playing. We were not doing very well even in the first half of the tournament. We were playing just fine but still stuck to our process. We are confident in our abilities. We know what we can do. This is something we will try to do tomorrow also.
What did Parthiv say on Vaibhav Suryavanshi?
RR has the ‘X factor’ in the form of Vaibhav and Jofra Archer, while GT relies on consistency. Parthiv said, ‘As long as we are getting results, we do not need to think about whether we want the X factor or continuity. It’s just a matter of getting everything in place and getting the result.
The former Indian wicketkeeper said that he has some plans for Vaibhav, which he would like to showcase on the field itself. Parthiv said, ‘I am not a commentator right now, so I will not be able to tell my plan. I am very excited about the way he is batting. Hopefully we will be able to get him out early in the match and implement our plan properly.
