Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium is among the 11 venues in the United States selected to host matches during the FIFA World Cup 2026 this summer.
Home to the NFL team Atlanta Falcons, the magnificent arena is one of 16 stadiums across the three host nations — Canada, Mexico, and the United States — chosen for the World Cup 2026.
This detailed guide from FourFourTwo covers everything about this remarkable venue, including its capacity, history, and role in the upcoming World Cup.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium is conveniently connected by the Blue Line and Green Line of MARTA, Atlanta’s rapid transit network. The GWCC/Philips Arena/CNN Center Station and Vine City Station directly serve the stadium, ensuring easy access for fans.
Located in Atlanta, Georgia, Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a modern architectural marvel with a distinctive exterior design. It was inaugurated in 2017 and features a retractable roof inspired by the Roman Pantheon, according to its designer. The venue can accommodate up to 75,000 spectators, making it one of the standout arenas in the United States for World Cup visitors.
While the stadium is primarily known as the home of the Atlanta Falcons, it also serves as the permanent base for Atlanta United, the city’s top men’s football club, and will become home to a new NWSL expansion team in 2028. Mercedes-Benz Stadium replaced the Georgia Dome, which hosted events during the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games — exactly three decades before the World Cup arrives.
The 2026 tournament marks the first time the state of Georgia will host World Cup matches. Atlanta was not a venue during the 1994 edition as it was focused on preparations for the Olympics. Unlike its predecessor, the Georgia Dome, Mercedes-Benz Stadium was designed with football in mind and has regularly hosted major matches since its opening.
The Falcons’ home ground will host seven World Cup fixtures, including group-stage games and a semi-final scheduled for July.
Situated just west of downtown Atlanta, Georgia’s capital city, Mercedes-Benz Stadium offers an ideal location for fans traveling to the tournament.
For the World Cup, the stadium will feature a seating capacity of 75,000, ranking it as the fourth-largest venue in the tournament lineup.
During the World Cup, the stadium will be referred to as Atlanta Stadium. It remains the home venue of the Atlanta Falcons and also hosts Major League Soccer club Atlanta United. In 2028, it will welcome a new tenant when the National Women’s Soccer League introduces its Atlanta-based team.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium is set to stage seven matches during the 2026 World Cup, including three knockout games.
