Triumph Motorcycles in India, as part of their new strategy, had downsized the 400 cc engines on all their entry-level models to a 350 cc unit. This move was intended to make the bikes a bit more affordable while also passing on the benefits to customers. However, we have now come across reports that suggest Triumph Motorcycles is planning to announce a price hike for its 350 cc motorcycle lineup from June 1.

Triumph Motorcycles launched the updated 350 cc range of motorcycles in the market in April this year. Just a month after the launch, the brand is now reportedly planning to increase prices for the Speed T4, Speed 400, Scrambler 400X, Scrambler 400 XC, Thruxton 400, and possibly even the newly introduced Tracker 400.

The price hike was actually announced in advance by a Triumph dealer from Mumbai, Shaman Triumph, on its social media page. The dealer mentioned that the whole range of 350 cc motorcycles will see a price hike of around Rs 5,000. While the dealer has shared the news on social media, Triumph and Bajaj have not officially commented on the same.

If the reports are true, then the 350 cc range from Triumph will see a price revision. The Rs 5,000 hike mentioned above is not going to be standard across all models and variants. Depending on the model you choose, the price hike would vary. The entry-level Speed T4 might get the smallest increase, while models like the Scrambler 400 XC and Thruxton 400 could see the biggest hike.

Triumph’s entry-level motorcycles are extremely popular among riders who want the Triumph badge at a relatively affordable price. Currently, prices for Triumph motorcycles start at Rs 1.95 lakh, ex-showroom, and go all the way up to Rs 2.89 lakh, ex-showroom.

The Speed T4 is priced at Rs 1.95 lakh, ex-showroom. Just above that, we have the Speed 400 priced at Rs 2.32 lakh, ex-showroom. Then there is the Tracker 400 at Rs 2.46 lakh, ex-showroom, the Scrambler 400X at Rs 2.59 lakh, ex-showroom, the Thruxton 400 at Rs 2.65 lakh, ex-showroom, and the Scrambler 400 XC at Rs 2.89 lakh, ex-showroom.

The major reason why Bajaj, Triumph, and KTM decided to downsize the engines on their 400 cc models was to benefit from the revised GST norms. After downsizing, these motorcycles would fall under the 18 percent GST category instead of the 28 percent category. As part of the downsizing, Bajaj reportedly made minor changes to the engine, like shortening the stroke without changing the bore, using a lightweight crankshaft, optimised connecting rods, and more.

The older 400 cc engine on the Triumph used to generate 39.5 PS and 37.5 Nm of torque. After the downsizing, the 349 cc engine now generates 37 PS and 32 Nm of torque. It is still mated to a 6-speed gearbox. It is surprising that Triumph is reportedly planning to revise the prices of the 350 cc models just a couple of months after their launch.

Bajaj has also downsized the engines on the NS400 and the Dominar and is now selling only the 350 cc versions. However, Bajaj-owned KTM is reportedly selling both 350 cc and 390 cc versions of the same motorcycles. It needs to be seen whether Bajaj will revise the prices for the Dominar, Pulsar and KTM range too.
