That small island in the Caribbean Sea, which once used to look eye to eye with superpower America at the instigation of the Soviet Union, is today struggling to save its existence. Cuba, a communist country located just 90 miles from the American mainland, is currently going through the most horrific and dark period in its history. The situation has become so bad that there is a shortage of food in the country, the power grid is completely stalled and people are dependent on every scrap of food. Amidst this all-round misery, US President Donald Trump’s open threats of military action have woken up Cuba. To save itself from the American attack and to rescue the country from the humanitarian tragedy, helpless Cuba has finally had to knock on the door of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
When the White House trembled at the name of Cuba in 1962
If we turn the pages of history, we understand that Cuba was not always so helpless. There was a time when Cuba had political and military dominance from Latin America to Africa. In 1959, the great revolutionaries Fidel Castro and Che Guevara together overthrew the brutal US-backed Batista dictatorship in Cuba and formed a communist government. The rise of a staunchly anti-communist country right under America’s nose was the biggest strategic blow to Washington. After this, in the year 1962, came the historic ‘Cuban Missile Crisis’, which brought the entire world to the brink of Third World War and nuclear destruction. At that time, the Soviet Union had secretly deployed its nuclear missiles on Cuban soil, fearing which even America itself started trembling. Cuba not only directly challenged Washington for decades, but also proved its strength by sending its army in the revolutionary movements of many countries of the world.
Che Guevara’s death and the collapse of the Soviet Union left the superpower penniless
The decline and fall of Cuba’s golden era began when Che Guevara, known as the poster boy of revolution, arrived in Bolivia to ignite the communist revolution in Latin America. There he was captured and brutally murdered with the help of the American intelligence agency CIA. This was the first and major ideological blow to Cuba’s global influence. After this, the remaining gap was filled by the disintegration of the Soviet Union (USSR) in the year 1991. In fact, Cuba’s entire economy and military strength depended on huge financial assistance from the Soviet Union and crude oil available at throwaway prices. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba became diplomatically and economically orphaned. After this, the ‘Special Period’ started in the country, which gave rise to starvation, social unrest and severe fuel shortage, due to which millions of Cuban citizens left the country and fled to America.
Donald Trump preparing to take revenge for 30 year old plane crash!
There is also an old rivalry behind the current crisis looming over Cuba. In 1996, Cuba shot down two small American planes that violated its airspace. Now, 30 years later, the Donald Trump administration has issued a court warrant against former Cuban President Raul Castro using the same incident as an excuse. Cuba is now afraid that after ousting Nicolas Maduro from power in Venezuela, Donald Trump can launch a direct military attack on Cuba at any time. Today’s Cuba is not as powerful as it was in 1962 to counter the US military. Due to political turmoil in Venezuela, the supply of oil from there has stopped, due to which Cuba’s power grid has completely collapsed. There are blackouts across the country for weeks, factories and businesses are at a complete standstill and hospitals are struggling with only small generators.
Cuba’s emotional appeal to the UN Security Council: ‘It is time to show solidarity’
Amidst this terrible humanitarian disaster, an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) was called on Tuesday. In the meeting, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parilla made a very emotional appeal to the international community with outstretched hands. “I call on the international community to immediately come forward and unite to save Cuba from this terrible humanitarian disaster. This is the time to stand up and show solidarity with the innocent people of Cuba,” he told the global forum. This restlessness of Cuba has increased because US President Donald Trump has openly expressed his intention to gain complete control over this communist island and carry out a coup there. Trump has warned in clear words that after Venezuela, Cuba’s capital ‘Havana’ is his next military target. In such a situation, it will be interesting to see whether the world comes forward to help Cuba or this communist country gets shattered in the pages of history forever.
