Anthony Gordon’s stint at Newcastle United could be nearing its conclusion, if fresh reports from Europe are accurate.
Bayern Munich are said to have stepped up their interest in Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, with a formal meeting reportedly set to take place between the player’s representatives and the German club, according to Sky Sport Switzerland.
The Bundesliga side have identified Gordon as a key target to strengthen their attacking setup under new manager Vincent Kompany.
Reports indicate that Bayern are ready to challenge Newcastle’s determination to keep the England international by making a substantial summer offer. The Bavarian club see Gordon as the perfect addition to inject pace and direct attacking threat at the Allianz Arena.
Gordon was missing from Newcastle’s 2-1 loss to Bournemouth last weekend, officially ruled out due to a minor hip issue.
However, his absence has only served to intensify speculation about his long-term future at St James’ Park.
Supporters fear that the former Everton winger might already be tempted by the prospect of Champions League football in Munich.
In preparation for a possible departure, Newcastle’s recruitment team have reportedly started compiling a shortlist of potential replacements.
Among the names being considered is Köln’s emerging star Said El Mala, whose physical attributes and goal-scoring ability in the Bundesliga have also attracted interest from Brighton and Hove Albion and Bayern Munich.
While manager Eddie Howe continues to publicly back Gordon, financial pressures related to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) could compel Newcastle to sanction a major sale during the summer transfer window.
If discussions in Munich go as planned, Gordon could follow the path of fellow English players Harry Kane and Eric Dier, both of whom made the move from the Premier League to the Bundesliga.
For Newcastle, the focus will shift to ensuring they maintain squad depth as they prepare for what promises to be a crucial summer rebuild.
The club will be keen to avoid a repeat of last summer’s situation involving Alexander Isak, when transfer uncertainty disrupted preparations for the new campaign.
Newcastle currently occupy 14th place in the Premier League table and appear likely to miss out on European competition next season.
