UV-protective clothing trend in New Delhi

New Delhi: Due to the scorching heat and strong sunlight, people are no longer dependent only on sunscreen. The demand for such clothes is increasing rapidly in the market, which provide protection from UV rays. Clothing such as jackets, shirts, trousers, hats, gloves and scarves are now available with UV-protective technology.

These clothes are made with special technology, the purpose of which is to prevent harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun from reaching the skin. For this reason, this trend has now become an important part of fashion as well as skin protection.

Function of UV-protective clothing

These clothes are woven more densely than normal fabric, due to which sunlight cannot penetrate easily. Additionally, they use fabrics like polyester, nylon and high-tech cotton, which effectively block UV rays.

Many companies also offer special UV-blocking coatings on clothing, which include ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which help reflect UV rays.

Importance of UPF

Just as sunscreen contains SPF, similarly these clothes contain UPF i.e. ultraviolet protection factor. This indicates how much UV rays the fabric can block.

UPF 15-20: General protection.

UPF 30-40: Good protection.

UPF 50+: Excellent protection.

Clothing with UPF 50+ can block approximately 98 percent of UV rays, while clothing with less than UPF 15 is not considered in the sun protection category.

Growing trend of UV-protective clothing

Due to the increasing dangers of summer, heatwave, sunburn and tanning, people are now getting attracted towards UV-protective clothing. Especially people traveling by bike, cycle, bus and auto are giving preference to these clothes.

Now this trend is not limited to sports wear only. UV-protective T-shirts, dresses, caps, gloves and children’s clothing are also available in the market. Dark colored and thick fabric clothing provides more protection than light colored and thin clothing.

Will the need for sunscreen go away?

Experts agree that UV-protective clothing provides continued protection, but that doesn’t mean you should stop using sunscreen. It is still necessary to apply sunscreen to the face, hands and exposed parts of the body. It is also advisable to wear sunglasses.

According to experts, if these clothes get wet, their UPF capacity may reduce. Therefore, it is better to carry sunscreen with you while going out.
