The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill has been passed in the Assam Assembly. With this, Assam has become the third state after Uttarakhand and Gujarat to implement UCC. According to the government of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the new law will bring equality and uniformity in marriage, divorce, inheritance and live-in relationships.
The main objective of this bill is to bring complete equality by abolishing separate laws based on religion in matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance and live-in relationships. Scheduled Tribes have been kept out of its scope, which has been done keeping in mind the cultural diversity of Assam.
Uniform Civil Code Bill passed in Assam Assembly
The Assam Assembly on Wednesday, May 27, passed the Uniform Civil Code Assam 2026 Bill by voice vote. This bill was passed after a discussion that lasted for about five hours. With this, Assam has become the third state in the country to implement UCC after Uttarakhand and Gujarat. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called it a historic step and said that this law will provide security, equality and justice especially to women from minority communities. After the implementation of this law, there will be uniform rules for all religions in Assam in marriage, divorce, inheritance and live-in relationships. The government is considering this as a big step towards women empowerment and social reform.
These big changes will happen in Assam when UCC is implemented
- Same rules to marriage will apply for all religions.
- The minimum age for marriage has been fixed at 21 years for men and 18 years for women.
- Polygamy and bigamy will be completely banned.
- It will be mandatory to register marriage and divorce within 60 days.
- For not registering, a fine of up to Rs 10,000 can be imposed.
- Providing fake documents can lead to jail term up to three months or fine up to Rs 25,000.
- Registration of live-in relationships has also been made mandatory.
- The same grounds like cruelty, desertion and mutual consent will apply in divorce cases.
- A provision has been made to give primary custody of children up to five years of age to the mother.
- Arrangements have been made to give equal rights to husband-wife, children and parents in inheritance and property distribution.
