Acclaimed Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta, best known for his cult classic Bhooter Bhabishyat and National Award-winning film Aparajitodied on Wednesday after reportedly falling from the terrace of his multi-storey residence in south Kolkata.
He was rushed to a nearby private hospital in Dhakuria, where doctors declared him dead, according to police officials.
The sudden demise of the celebrated director has sent shockwaves through the Bengali film industry, with actors and filmmakers gathering at the hospital to pay their final respects.
Police Begin Investigation Into Anik Dutta’s Death
Police confirmed that a team visited the residence soon after the incident and launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fall. Officials said the filmmaker was taken to the hospital immediately after the incident, but he could not be saved.
So far, the family has not issued any official statement regarding the tragedy.
Several prominent personalities from the Bengali entertainment industry, including actors Sreelekha Mitra, Rudranil Ghosh and filmmaker Arindam Sil, were seen outside the hospital following the heartbreaking news.
Anik Dutta’s Contribution To Bengali Cinema
Anik Dutta became a household name in Bengali cinema after the release of Bhooter Bhabishyat in 2012. The horror-comedy earned widespread praise for blending satire, humour and social commentary into an entertaining cinematic experience.
The film featured an ensemble cast including Paran Bandopadhyay, Swastika Mukherjee, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, Parambrata Chatterjee and Saswata Chatterjee.

Anik Dutta’s final directorial venture was the detective thriller Warm Apart Kolkatateireleased during Durga Puja 2025. The film starred Abir Chatterjee, Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed and Dulal Lahiri and received appreciation from audiences for its suspense-driven storytelling.
The filmmaker was widely respected for bringing intelligent satire, nostalgia and literary depth to Bengali cinema.
