New Delhi, 27 May 2026 – country’s first hydrogen trainHas been approved by the Railway Board of India. With this, the way has been paved for environmentally friendly, future-oriented, cheap and fast railway service.

The Railway Board has approved the country’s first hydrogen train. This train with 10 coaches will run between Jind and Sonipat. Will come into play. This train will not only reduce pollution but will also save diesel costs.

The Railway Ministry has given the green signal to the first train running on hydrogen. This DEMU (Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit) train will run at a speed of 75 kilometers per hour. This train will be operated between Jind and Sonipat of Northern Railway zone. Compared to diesel engine trains, this train does not cause any pollution and is safer and more sustainable for the environment. Apart from this, hydrogen train will prove to be very beneficial for students, working class and people who travel every day.

Features of the country’s first hydrogen train

This first hydrogen train of the country will have 10 coaches and will run on broad gauge track.

This train will run very quietly, so that passengers will have a very comfortable traveling experience.

The train has two power cars (DPC), each with a capacity of 1200-1200 kilowatts, which means that overall the train gets a power of 2400 kilowatts. 8 passenger coaches have been added to it.

This is a completely eco-friendly train. It does not cause any pollution and only water vapor comes out from the silencer.

How will this train run?

The hydrogen train will run without direct use of any diesel or electricity. This train will use hydrogen fuel cells, which will generate electricity. The total production of electricity through this system is 1,200 kilowatts. Along with this, this train will work on DPRS i.e. Distributed Power Rolling Stock Technology, which distributes electricity evenly throughout the train. Operating hydrogen trains will not only save huge diesel costs, but carbon emissions will also become zero.

For now, this train will be operated only on Jind-Sonipat section. Also, its maintenance will be done at Shakurbasti depot in Delhi. This train will have to follow all kinds of strict safety standards. Apart from this, trained technical staff will also be present with the train for the initial 3 months, so that any technical problems arising during the journey can be immediately resolved. As part of security, the hydrogen plant will be monitored 24 hours a day and its sensors, including the train, will be cleaned regularly.
