Since his arrival at Old Trafford, Manuel Ugarte’s performances have failed to leave a lasting impression, despite being given ample opportunities to prove himself.

During his debut season in M16, the Uruguayan midfielder featured prominently under Erik ten Hag, starting in 22 Premier League matches and making seven further appearances as a substitute. He was left unused on the bench on only three occasions throughout that campaign.

However, the just-concluded 2025/2026 season painted a different picture. Ugarte managed only eight league starts across the entire campaign, while coming off the bench in 14 fixtures. He also found himself excluded from the matchday squad for as many as 15 games, signalling a significant drop in his standing within the team.

Under Michael Carrick’s management, Ugarte’s situation appeared to worsen. It became evident early in Carrick’s tenure that the new manager was not particularly convinced by the midfielder’s abilities.

The 25-year-old was rarely called upon initially after Carrick took charge, and he only earned his first start under the Englishman in the twelfth match of Carrick’s reign — primarily because Kobbie Mainoo was sidelined with an injury at the time.

According to data compiled by Transfermarkt, Ugarte’s record since Carrick’s appointment in January reflects a player struggling to secure regular involvement in the first team setup.

Further reports from respected journalist Laurie Whitwell indicated that Sir Jim Ratcliffe had personally authorised Ugarte’s sale following a visit to Carrington shortly after Carrick’s arrival, underlining the club’s initial intent to move the player on.

Nevertheless, Manchester United’s options may be limited this summer. Should no suitable offers arrive for the out-of-favour midfielder, the club might be compelled to retain him as part of the squad for the upcoming campaign, marking a potential U-turn from their earlier stance.
