Bakrid 2026: Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated tomorrow in India, central and state governments changed the calendar of holidays.

New Delhi. This year, the doubt created across the country regarding the exact date of Bakrid has now completely ended. This holy festival will be celebrated with traditional devotion and enthusiasm in most parts of India tomorrow i.e. Thursday, 28th May. Shahi Imam of Delhi’s historic Jama Masjid and various major moon committees of the country have jointly taken this official decision due to the non-sightedness of the moon of Dhul Hijjah on time.

Sighting of the moon changed the date

According to the Islamic lunar calendar, the festival of Eid al-Adha is celebrated on the 10th of the month of Zil Hijja. Earlier this festival was likely to be celebrated on May 27, but the moon was not visible in most parts of the country on Sunday evening. After which the religious institutions unanimously announced that Bakrid will be celebrated on 28 May in mainland India. Whereas in areas like Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh, Eid is being celebrated today, on 27th May, based on local moon sighting traditions.

Government and stock market changed holidays

Immediately after this announcement of Chand Committees, major changes have also been made at the administrative level. According to the official notification issued by the Ministry of Personnel of the Central Government on Press Information Bureau, Delhi, the date of holiday for all central administrative offices located in Delhi and New Delhi has been changed from May 27 to May 28.

Apart from this, many state governments including Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Delhi, Karnataka, Gujarat and Telangana have also amended their public holidays calendar. Taking back the previously declared holidays of 26th and 27th May, the West Bengal government has now declared only 28th May as a state holiday. In Uttar Pradesh too, there has been talk of giving holiday on both 27th and 28th May in connection with the festival. Apart from this, National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) have also announced to keep the stock market closed on May 28 (Thursday).

The era of sacrifice will continue

Special prayers will be offered in mosques and Eidgahs on Thursday morning, after which the process of sacrifice under Sunnah-e-Ibrahimi will continue for the next three days (May 28, 29 and 30). This festival of Bakrid is celebrated in memory of Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering devotion towards God and his great sacrifice. For this, the administration has ensured strict arrangements for cleanliness and security in all major cities.
