Harry Kane and Michael Olise both rejected opportunities to join Paris Saint-Germain, as the Ligue 1 champions reportedly struggled with an identity crisis following the departures of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Neymar. Reports suggest that the two players, instead of moving to the Parc des Princes, chose Bayern Munich out of concern that PSG were entering a decline.

Question marks over PSG’s post-superstar era

Paris Saint-Germain’s aura appeared to fade as the club began moving away from its star-studded ‘Galactico’ phase. After the exits of Messi, Neymar, and later Mbappe, the French champions faced increasing difficulty convincing top European players that they remained among the continent’s elite destinations.

Inside the club, it was reportedly felt that “many people and players thought PSG would go back to being a small club” following the loss of their three global icons.

This perception created challenges in PSG’s recruitment efforts, as several top targets opted for clubs offering clearer sporting stability. The management struggled to present a compelling vision for the future when their most recognisable figures had left within a short span, leaving a void in global appeal at the Parc des Princes.

Kane’s focus on immediate European glory

As per French outlet L'Equipe, Kane was one of PSG’s top priorities as they sought a prolific replacement for their departed forwards. The club reportedly held detailed discussions with the England captain’s representatives, including his brother and father. However, Kane ultimately remained unconvinced by PSG’s pitch.

A PSG insider reportedly explained: “At his age, Kane wanted to join a club capable of winning the Champions League immediately. He didn’t really believe in the PSG project.” The striker therefore chose the proven success of Bayern Munich, leaving PSG to reassess their inability to bring in a marquee replacement to lead their attack.

Olise chooses Bayern’s development path

The setback for PSG wasn’t limited to experienced stars. Emerging talents like Michael Olise also preferred the Bundesliga route. The Crystal Palace winger, who had attracted major interest across Europe, carefully evaluated his career trajectory before deciding that his growth would be better served in Germany rather than in Paris. He eventually followed Kane to Bayern Munich in a high-profile transfer.

Sources within PSG admitted they had little leverage once Olise made up his mind. Commenting on the winger’s decision, a club representative said: “It was up to him to make his decision. He assessed everything and, like others, chose a different project.”

Rebuilding under Luis Enrique

Despite these setbacks, PSG’s outlook has improved under Luis Enrique, who has redefined the team’s tactical and collective identity. His approach has gradually restored some of the club’s lost credibility in Europe.

While Kane and Olise initially perceived PSG as a fading force, Enrique’s system has produced a more united and competitive squad, delivering stronger performances on the continental stage and easing early concerns about decline.

The club has since implemented a more structured transfer policy, prioritising balance and depth over star power. PSG’s internal framework now ensures that every outgoing player is adequately replaced, maintaining squad competitiveness without relying on the flashy, headline-grabbing signings that once characterised their recruitment strategy.
