NEW YORK – United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) captain Tyler Adams showed his full support for his home team, the New York Knicks, after they clinched their first NBA Finals berth in 27 years by sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night. While speaking about basketball, New York’s sports culture and the upcoming World Cup, the proud New Yorker confidently declared, “Knicks in four.”
Adams backs the Knicks wholeheartedly
On Tuesday afternoon, Adams was officially named in the USMNT’s World Cup squad, but the New York native clearly had the Knicks on his mind as well. Having grown up just over an hour outside New York City, he was asked for his prediction for the NBA Finals — the team’s first appearance since the year he was born — and he didn’t hesitate to make a bold call.
Chasing their first championship since 1973
The phrase “Knicks in four” has become a popular slogan among fans of the franchise, symbolising their faith that the Knicks will sweep their opponents in a best-of-seven series. That confidence has been justified so far, as the team has already achieved sweeps in both the Eastern Conference semifinals and finals, defeating the Philadelphia 76ers and the Cleveland Cavaliers to earn their shot at a potential first title since 1973.
The USMNT, meanwhile, have never lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy and are aiming to reach the quarterfinal stage for the first time in 24 years.
USMNT World Cup squad confirmed
Adams, currently representing Premier League club AFC Bournemouth, is preparing for his second World Cup appearance. He played every minute of the USA’s 2022 campaign despite coping with injuries, reinforcing his reputation as one of the most reliable and influential leaders in the squad.
What lies ahead?
The USMNT will begin their 2026 World Cup journey with three Group D fixtures across the United States. They are scheduled to face Paraguay on June 12 at 9 p.m. ET, Australia on June 19 at 3 p.m. ET, and Turkey on June 25 at 10 p.m. ET.
