Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday said the Karnataka government has increased minimum wages by an average 60%, benefiting workers across more than 83 scheduled occupations.
The revised wage structure will cover workers engaged in e-commerce, courier services, private educational institutions, hospitals, hotels, food processing units, petrol bunks, religious institutions and private finance establishments, among others, he said in a post on X.
The government has also restructured the wage fixation system by reducing the number of wage zones from four to three. Areas under Greater Bengaluru will fall under Zone I, district headquarters under Zone II, and the remaining parts of the state under Zone III.
Under the revised structure, unskilled workers in Zone III will receive a minimum monthly wage of up to Rs 19,300, while skilled workers will be entitled to wages of up to Rs 31,100.
In Bengaluru, unskilled workers will get a minimum monthly wage of Rs 23,376, while highly skilled workers will receive up to Rs 31,114 a month.
The government has also removed gender disparities in wage structures.
“We are committed to the welfare of the working class engaged in nation-building,” Siddaramaiah said, adding that economic growth must strengthen social justice and improve livelihoods for organised and unorganised workers.
Meanwhile, the Bangalore Hotels Association said it would urge the government to review the revised wage structure, citing rising operational costs following recent fuel price hikes.
