Brentford have reportedly opened discussions over signing Jadon Sancho on a free transfer this summer, although the 26-year-old winger is said to be prioritising a move to a different Premier League side.
Among the many ill-fated transfers made by Manchester United since the Sir Alex Ferguson era, the £73 million deal with Borussia Dortmund for Sancho stands out as one of the most disappointing. The South London-born player never managed to settle in Manchester, despite having come through the academy system of Manchester City before moving to Germany at the age of 17.
During his time at Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park, Sancho established himself as one of Europe’s most thrilling young wingers, known for his dazzling dribbling and creative flair that rivalled the continent’s top attacking talents.
At the time of his arrival, United appeared to have secured the final piece of a young attacking trio alongside Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood. However, the fact that none of the three remain at Old Trafford today reflects how poorly that project unfolded.
Sancho’s record at Manchester United tells its own story — just 12 goals and six assists in 83 appearances. His limited impact on the pitch was compounded by a series of off-field issues, resulting in the club sanctioning multiple loan spells as no team was willing to buy him outright.
This season, Sancho has been on loan at Aston Villa after failing to reach an agreement with Chelsea last summer, despite a similar arrangement in the 2024/25 campaign. Before that, he returned to Borussia Dortmund on a six-month loan deal in January 2024.
Manchester United technically have the option to extend his lucrative contract by another year, though INEOS, the club’s new sporting leadership, reportedly have no intention of doing so. They are instead eager to move on from what has proved to be an expensive misstep as they prepare for a Champions League return next season.
As a result, Sancho will be available as a free agent next month. Clubs such as Brentford have already held preliminary talks, while Bournemouth and Crystal Palace are also monitoring the situation, according to Sports Boom.
However, Sancho is believed to be pushing to remain in Birmingham, as he is said to be keen to continue at Aston Villa next season. He has rediscovered some of his form under Unai Emery, becoming the second Manchester United loanee to rejuvenate his career with the Spanish manager.
Aston Villa have enjoyed a superb season under Emery, finishing fourth in the Premier League and lifting the Europa League trophy after a commanding 3-0 win over Freiburg in Istanbul. Sancho featured regularly in the second half of the campaign following a slow start at Villa Park.
Emery has publicly expressed his interest in retaining Sancho on a permanent basis. However, the winger would likely need to accept a significant reduction in his wages to make the move feasible — something he has previously been reluctant to consider.
For Manchester United, the priority is simply to move him on, regardless of his next destination. While the likes of Brentford, Bournemouth, and Palace may see value in signing him on a free transfer, their wage structures are unlikely to appeal to Sancho.
If Aston Villa decide to allocate the funds saved on a transfer fee to meet his salary expectations, Sancho could well stay put. Otherwise, potential offers from Türkiye or Saudi Arabia may provide him with an opportunity to revive his career away from English football, where his reputation has fallen to its lowest ebb.
