Delhi-based Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has decided to implement a new framework for married PhD students by amending its hostel regulations. According to a draft hostel manual released by the university administration, married research scholars will now have to incur higher costs than before to reside in the hostels. Additionally, new rules have been introduced regarding hostel allotment and the duration of residency.
At JNU’s Mahanadi Hostel, the security deposit amount for married research scholars has now been increased. Under the new system, students will be required to pay a refundable security deposit. Furthermore, room rent, electricity, and water charges, and fees for other amenities will be charged separately. The university administration states that this decision was taken in light of rising costs related to amenities and maintenance.
Rent May Increase Annually
According to the new hostel policy, room rent and other charges may be revised upwards from time to time. It has been stated that the university will determine the fees based on the actual operational costs incurred in running the hostels. Consequently, students may have to pay higher fees in the coming years.
Hostel Facility Available for Only Four Years
The JNU administration has also set a time limit for hostel residency. Under the new rules, PhD students will be permitted to reside in the hostel for a maximum of four years from the date of their admission. Upon the completion of this period, students will be required to vacate the hostel. The university maintains that this measure will ensure that new students also have access to hostel accommodation facilities.
Priority for Pregnant Women and Those with Children
The draft regulations include a provision granting priority in hostel allotment to pregnant research scholars and women who are caring for young children. The university administration believes that this initiative will facilitate female research scholars in continuing their academic pursuits. New Rules to Apply to International Students as Well
JNU has clarified that these hostel-related regulations will apply not only to Indian students but also to international students. Prior to hostel allotment, all students will be required to submit an affidavit pledging their adherence to these rules.
Rules Tightened Due to Limited Seats
The number of hostel seats at the university is limited, whereas a large number of students apply every year. For this reason, the administration has further tightened the hostel allotment process. According to JNU, hostel facilities will be made available only to eligible students, and allotments will be based strictly on established regulations.
