New Delhi: At least five passengers were killed and over 15 others sustained serious injuries after a double-decker AC bus travelling from Delhi to Bihar overturned on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district on Tuesday morning.
The accident took place around 5 am near kilometre 262 under Auras police station limits. Preliminary investigations suggest the driver may have dozed off behind the wheel, leading to the crash.
Vehicle allegedly moving at high speedAccording to reports, the bus was carrying around 30 passengers and was moving at high speed when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle. The bus hit the divider, overturned and ended up hanging over the expressway railing.
The impact was so severe that it shattered the windows and threw several passengers out of the vehicle and onto the road below.
Local residents alerted authorities about the accident, after which Auras police, rescue teams from the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) and multiple ambulances rushed to the site.
Efforts on to identify the deadRescue personnel, with the help of locals, pulled injured passengers out of the bus and shifted them to a nearby community health centre.
Critically injured passengers were referred to Lucknow’s Trauma Centre, while others were shifted to a district hospital for treatment.
Police said the bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination and efforts are underway to establish their identities.
