Friends, there is still time for the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and in the meantime, the tenure of the Gram Panchayats has ended on May 26, 2026, after which the state government has taken an important step to ensure that the village-level administration continues without any interruption. Acting on the instructions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the outgoing village heads will now act as administrators of their respective gram panchayats from May 27, let us know the complete details-

The government has empowered District Magistrates (DMs) across the state to appoint former village heads as administrators until new panchayats are formed, or for a maximum period of six months—whichever is earlier.

Administrator limited to routine tasks only

The government has clearly stated that these administrators will be responsible only for the daily functioning of the panchayats. They will not have the authority to take any major decisions or make policy changes.

The move is aimed at maintaining administrative continuity and ensuring that essential public services and ongoing development projects in villages continue to run smoothly.

DM’s approval required for major decisions

Where important decisions are required, administrators will not be allowed to act independently. Any such proposal should first be sent to the District Magistrate through the District Panchayat Raj Officer, and action can proceed on it only after getting the DM’s approval.

Provisions under Panchayat Act

According to the existing Panchayat laws, the tenure of Gram Panchayats is fixed for five years. Once this tenure expires, and until new Panchayats are formed, the State Government has the right to appoint the Administrator.
