According to experts, symptoms of attack may vary from person to person, but there are some signs which should never be ignored. The main symptoms of heart attack are feeling of chest pain, stiffness, pressure or discomfort. This pain may spread to the arms, left shoulder, elbow, jaw, neck or back. Along with this, difficulty in breathing or sudden shortness of breath. Symptoms like nausea, vomiting or stomach discomfort also occur.
Apart from this, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, sudden cold sweat without any exertion and gradual turning pale of the entire body including the face. These symptoms are sometimes less pronounced in women and the elderly, so it is important to remain alert. If any of these symptoms persist for more than 5 minutes, immediately inform the doctor or call the emergency number.
Prevention from heart attack is possible if some necessary changes are made in the daily routine. The most important thing is to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Exercise for at least 30 minutes daily. Brisk walking, cycling, swimming or yoga are very beneficial. Eat a healthy diet.
Health experts say not to panic if a heart attack occurs. Make the patient lie down in a comfortable position, loosen tight clothing and seek medical help immediately. Aspirin tablets can be given by chewing (as per doctor’s advice). Heart attack cases are increasing rapidly in India. Therefore, every person above 30 years of age should get regular health checkups done.
