Slovenia Coach Bostjan Cesar Criticises Manchester United Over Benjamin Sesko's Injury Management

Benjamin Sesko has had a remarkable debut season in English football.

For a striker whom many were quick to label as another expensive misfire, the Slovenian forward has convincingly silenced his doubters.

Across 30 league appearances, including just 17 starts, the £74 million signing from the summer of 2025 scored 11 goals and contributed one assist.

For a player adapting to a new league under immense expectations at a club that demands instant results, Sesko’s first campaign has been impressive.

It is also worth highlighting that his numbers could have been even better; most of his goals came around the turn of the year, and had he not missed the last three matches, his tally might have been higher.

Indeed, Sesko’s form in 2026 was exceptional, as he found his rhythm in Manchester United colours, netting 10 goals in that period.

His fine performances in recent months have even left his national team coach feeling somewhat frustrated at not being able to utilise him for Slovenia.

Slovenian national team manager Bostjan Cesar expressed his disappointment that he could not depend on Sesko during the March international break due to injury, while the striker continued to feature for Manchester United.

According to Cesar, allowing Sesko to play only aggravated his condition, with the final blow coming after a collision with the advertising boards following a push from Ibrahima Konate during United’s 3-2 victory over Liverpool, which has sidelined the striker since then.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Cesar voiced his frustration, saying:

“He missed the last assembly in March, and then I kind of wanted him to be absent from United for a while, but then he came back quickly, and I don’t think he missed a game for the club.”

Although Sesko could have rejoined the Slovenian team for the upcoming friendlies against Cyprus and Croatia, Cesar confirmed that the forward would not be taking part, stating:

“But if a player hasn’t been in a competitive rhythm for a month, then I don’t see the point in him coming and playing at half-strength.”

It’s a setback for Slovenia, who will be without their star striker for those matches.

For Manchester United, the priority is ensuring Sesko uses this period to fully recover and return to peak condition ahead of pre-season training in early July.

Given the glimpses of his ability throughout this season while leading United’s attack, expectations will be high for Sesko to deliver even more next year.

With United aiming for silverware and competing on multiple fronts, a fully fit and firing Sesko could be key to their ambitions.
