Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand has encouraged the club to consider signing Robert Lewandowski on a free transfer this summer.
Barcelona have officially confirmed that Lewandowski’s spell at Camp Nou has concluded, meaning the Polish striker will now be available as a free agent.
After securing a third-place finish and qualification for the Champions League, Michael Carrick and his staff are expected to focus on strengthening the squad during the upcoming transfer window. While reinforcing the midfield is thought to be the top priority, United are also likely to address other areas in order to build more depth for the challenges of next season.
The striker position may also be revisited, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding Joshua Zirkzee’s future at Old Trafford.
The Dutch forward struggled for regular minutes in the recently concluded campaign, and ongoing speculation suggests he could depart this summer. Reports indicate that several Serie A clubs, including AC Milan, Juventus, and AS Roma, are interested in bringing him back to Italy.
Speaking on his podcast, Rio Ferdinand Presents, the former defender urged United to move for Lewandowski, highlighting that the veteran forward could not only provide depth in attack but also serve as a mentor to young striker Benjamin Sesko.
During his time at Barcelona, Lewandowski scored 120 goals in 193 appearances, helping the club secure three La Liga titles.
Before his stint in Spain, the Poland international enjoyed an extraordinary career at Bayern Munich, where he netted 344 goals in 375 matches, winning eight Bundesliga titles and the UEFA Champions League.
Ferdinand said, “They’re talking about [Atalanta midfielder] Ederson, who we should have signed two years ago. He’s a good footballer.”
He added, “I think we’ll need to buy two or three midfielders to strengthen that area. We need energy, mobility, and players who can move.”
“Lewandowski wouldn’t be a bad option either if they are looking to add another striker. If we brought him in, look at his experience — the amount Sesko could learn from him…”
The six-time Premier League champion further stated, “If you believe Sesko is the striker for the next five years, imagine how much he could learn from Lewandowski, who is a fantastic and humble person. He would guide Sesko, show him the way, and help him develop.”
“That would be a smart signing, even if the wages might be high. For the benefit of the squad, his presence would be invaluable.”
“It’s shaping up to be a big and fascinating summer to see who Manchester United decide to bring in.”
Sesko concluded his debut Premier League season with 11 goals and one assist in 30 appearances — a promising return for his first year in English football.
