Rio Ferdinand advises Manchester United to sign 'wonderful and humble' Robert Lewandowski – calls wages ‘crazy but worth it’

Rio Ferdinand has urged his former club Manchester United to bring in the “wonderful and humble” Robert Lewandowski this summer, along with “two or three” players in midfield.

Lewandowski is currently a free agent after parting ways with Barcelona at the end of the season and has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford during the upcoming transfer window.

The Polish striker has an extraordinary record of 629 career goals and has lifted 21 major trophies, the majority of them during his time with Bayern Munich. He later joined Barcelona in the summer of 2022, where he helped the Catalan side secure three La Liga titles.

At 37 years of age, Lewandowski may be approaching the twilight of his career, but he still managed to score 19 goals across all competitions this season. Ferdinand believes the veteran forward could play a crucial role at United, particularly as a mentor to young striker Benjamin Sesko.

Discussing Manchester United’s transfer needs ahead of the summer window on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: “They’re talking about [Atalanta midfielder] Ederson, who we should have signed two years ago. He’s a good footballer.”

He continued: “I think we’ll need to bring in two or three midfielders to strengthen that area. We need players with energy, mobility, and the ability to move well on the pitch.”

“Lewandowski wouldn’t be a bad option either if United are planning to sign another striker. Just imagine the experience he brings and how much Sesko could learn from him.”

“If you think Sesko is the long-term solution for the next five years, the lessons he could gain from Lewandowski — who is such a wonderful, humble person — would be invaluable. He would guide Sesko and help him develop his game.”

“Even if the wages seem crazy, it would still be a smart signing. If you want to improve the squad, Lewandowski’s presence would make a huge difference.”

“It’s going to be a big and fascinating summer to see who Manchester United decide to go for.”

Lewandowski was Barcelona’s top earner, reportedly making around €400,000 per week according to Capology. This makes a move to the Saudi Pro League a strong possibility, with Al Hilal and Al Ittihad both said to be interested.

Meanwhile, MLS side Chicago Fire are also reportedly pursuing the striker, having held discussions with his representatives earlier in the year.
