Daniel Suarez Wins Emotional Coca-Cola 600

Daniel Suarez delivered one of the most emotional victories of his NASCAR career Sunday night, winning the rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway after an evening dominated by tributes to the late Kyle Busch.

Suarez used a late strategic pit stop and timely weather conditions to secure his third career Cup Series victory and his first since 2024.

The triumph carried deep personal meaning because Suarez previously raced for Kyle Busch Motorsports during the early stages of his career.

Historic Win for Mexican Driver

With the victory, Suarez became the first Mexican-born driver ever to win the Coca-Cola 600 — one of NASCAR’s crown jewel events.

For much of the race, Suarez was not considered a leading contender. But his team made a critical late decision to take only two tires during a pit stop, giving him track position as rain clouds approached the speedway.

When NASCAR restarted the race, Suarez managed to hold off:

• Denny Hamlin

before heavy rain forced officials to call the event with 27 laps remaining.

Bell finished second while Hamlin took third.

The race unfolded under a cloud of grief following Busch’s death earlier in the week at age 41.

Busch, a two-time Cup Series champion and one of NASCAR’s greatest drivers, reportedly died after severe pneumonia developed into sepsis, causing rapid medical complications.

According to reports, Busch became unresponsive while practicing in a Chevrolet simulator Wednesday.

Bell and Hamlin Fall Short

Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin appeared to have the fastest cars late in the race.

But during consecutive restarts, neither driver could clear Suarez’s No. 7 Chevrolet.

Hamlin added that his team was “just a little unlucky” despite having one of the strongest cars throughout the night.

Several Top Drivers Crash Out

The race also featured multiple major accidents involving top NASCAR stars.

Defending champion Ross Chastain crashed after contact with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. with 81 laps remaining.

Earlier in the race:

• Austin Cindric

were eliminated in a collision after only 52 laps.

Meanwhile, Chase Elliott slammed into the outside wall on Lap 90, ending his night early.

Kyle Busch’s Legacy Looms Over NASCAR

Busch’s death sent shockwaves through the motorsports world only days before the Coca-Cola 600.

Across NASCAR’s three national series, Busch accumulated a record 234 victories and became one of the sport’s defining figures.

Richard Childress Racing temporarily retired Busch’s iconic No. 8 car following his death.

Austin Hill filled Busch’s spot Sunday driving the No. 33 Chevrolet and finished 26th.

The organization said Busch’s son Brexton may eventually inherit the No. 8 in the future.
