Chamber of Trade and Industry On Petrol-Diesel Price Hike: There has been an uproar in the country due to the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel four times in 10 days. Modi government is on target of entire opposition including Congress due to increase in cost of petrol and diesel. Here, amidst the rising prices of petrol and diesel, a big statement has come from the Chamber of Trade and Industry i.e. CTI. CTI has demanded to make petrol and diesel cheaper by Rs 10-15. CTI has also given an example along with the fact of making petrol and diesel cheaper by Rs 10-15.
CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal has written a letter to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri regarding this. CTI Chairman has appealed to call an emergency meeting of the Finance Ministers of all the states. Goyal has proposed that a flat 5% VAT be imposed on petrol and diesel across the country for the next three months, so that consumers can get relief of Rs 10 to 15 per litre.
The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has demanded immediate relief in view of this continuously increasing inflation. Brijesh Goyal wrote in his letter – Excise duty on petrol and diesel is the responsibility of the Central Government, but VAT is a state subject, hence the responsibility of providing relief in this time of crisis is not on the Center alone, the states will also have to come forward. There are BJP or NDA governments in 21 states, in such a situation Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri can easily issue instructions to all the states. He also clarified that if the situation in the international market becomes normal in three months, then the states can review their VAT rates again.
Sky-high difference between states
CTI also shared data from different states
- Telangana- 35.20% VAT on petrol
- Andhra Pradesh- 31% VAT + additional tax
- Delhi- 19.40% VAT
- Whereas in Andaman and Nicobar, due to only 1% VAT, petrol is cheaper and the situation of diesel is also almost similar.
