Mikel Arteta has finally guided Arsenal to their long-awaited Premier League title after a 22-year drought, but questions are emerging in north London about whether the Spanish manager could be enticed back to his homeland by Barcelona. Arteta, who came through the renowned La Masia academy and learned his coaching philosophy under Pep Guardiola, now faces speculation similar to what Arsene Wenger once experienced. Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has drawn parallels between the two situations, suggesting that the conversation around Arteta’s future echoes Wenger’s past links with Real Madrid.
During Wenger’s 22-year tenure at Arsenal, when he led the Gunners to three Premier League titles—most memorably the historic ‘Invincibles’ campaign of 2003-04—he was widely recognised as one of football’s greatest managerial minds. His tactical brilliance and long-term vision attracted consistent attention from top European clubs. Real Madrid, in particular, often looked to lure ‘Le Professeur’ to manage their star-studded ‘Galacticos’ squad.
Though discussions with the Spanish giants reportedly took place while Wenger was still under contract at Highbury, no agreement was ever finalised. Wenger remained loyal to Arsenal, completing an extraordinary 22 years at the helm before departing in 2018. Following a brief period under Unai Emery, the club appointed Arteta in December 2019, marking the beginning of a new era.
Now, six years and 350 matches later, Arteta has restored Arsenal’s domestic dominance in the 2025-26 season. With a potential double still within reach, the Gunners are preparing to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final on May 30, a match that could further solidify his legacy.
Arteta’s current contract runs until the summer of 2027, and discussions of an extension have already been floated. Many believe the San Sebastian-born coach could emulate Wenger by staying in charge for over a decade. However, the question remains—could a tempting offer from Barcelona persuade him to move on?
Considering his deep-rooted ties with the Catalan club, some in north London worry that Barcelona might attempt to bring him home. When asked about this possibility, former Arsenal midfielder and ‘Invincibles’ member Ray Parlour—speaking on behalf of 10bet—told GOAL: “I think it’d be a bit like Arsene Wenger. There were always rumours about him going to Real Madrid, but he was a very loyal man.”
Parlour continued, “He knew exactly what he wanted to achieve at Arsenal. Maybe he stayed a bit too long in the end, but during that crucial period with the new stadium and everything else, his loyalty was vital. I think Arteta could be similar in that sense.”
He added, “I don’t know what Mikel Arteta is thinking or which club he dreamed of managing as a boy—you always have dreams as a manager—but if an opportunity comes along that’s impossible to refuse, we’ll just have to wait and see.”
“That said, I still believe Arsenal have a lot of work ahead to remain successful—perhaps not at Manchester City’s level yet, but definitely challenging for trophies every season. Arteta can continue building that legacy and making history with the club. I’m sure that’s what he wants to do.”
When recently asked about his long-term plans, Arteta remained focused on the immediate challenges ahead. He explained: “There’s no update on that. We don’t have time to discuss it now—our full focus is on what we need to achieve between now and the end of the season.”
He added, “I’m fully committed, really happy, and in a good place. My family is happy, and I still have tremendous ambition to accomplish more with this football club. Right now, everything feels positive.”
“This job is all about the present—giving your best every day and believing you can lead and inspire the group to great things. I feel that way now, and hopefully, I’ll keep that feeling through the end of the season with a fantastic outcome.”
After their dramatic final-day victory over Crystal Palace, Arsenal celebrated lifting the Premier League trophy with joyous scenes that continued long into the night. Yet, the celebrations have only briefly paused. The Gunners now turn their attention to Budapest, where they will meet PSG in the Champions League final on Saturday, aiming to capture their first European crown and complete a historic double under Arteta.
