Chelsea are ready to present a formal proposal to RB Leipzig after reportedly reaching a personal agreement with Netherlands international Xavi Simons.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Simons has made it clear that his preferred destination is Chelsea. The young forward has already agreed personal terms with the Premier League side and turned down offers from Bayern Munich. According to Sky, the reigning Club World Cup champions have assured Simons that they will soon table an official bid to Leipzig for his transfer. However, for now, the Dutchman is expected to play in Leipzig’s opening Bundesliga clash against Bayern Munich.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Chelsea have been in contact with Simons for a while and have now received his approval to move forward. Leipzig, on their end, have indicated readiness to sell the 22-year-old if the right terms are met. Reports suggest that the German club value the Netherlands winger at around €70 million (£60m/$82m). Sporting director Marcel Schafer has also stated that any deal will only be accepted if it suits the club’s plans. The London club are currently delaying the transfer as they look to generate funds through player sales. Chelsea are considering the departures of Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson to help finance the Simons deal.
TELL ME MORE
Chelsea had initially planned to raise funds through Christopher Nkunku’s potential sale to Bayern Munich. However, that move appears to be collapsing, as the German champions prefer a loan agreement, while Chelsea are pushing for a permanent transfer valued at around €40m (£34m/$46m). Nkunku, the French forward who joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig, is under contract with the Blues until 2029.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR CHELSEA?
In addition to pursuing Simons, Chelsea are also keen on signing Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine winger is reportedly open to a move to Stamford Bridge and is waiting for a formal offer. The two-time Champions League winners are said to be ready to offer around €35m (£30m/$40m) for the 19-year-old forward.
Chelsea supporters can look forward to more updates as the transfer window progresses, with the club actively working to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season.
