Manchester United plan contract move to prevent £73m signing Jadon Sancho from leaving Old Trafford cheaply after difficult loan spell at Aston Villa

Manchester United are reportedly taking steps to stop Jadon Sancho from leaving Old Trafford in a cut-price transfer this summer. Despite his underwhelming loan spell away from the club, the Red Devils are determined to preserve the value of the winger they signed for £73 million just three years ago.

United aim to activate contract clause to retain market value

As per a report from Bild, Manchester United intend to trigger an extension clause in Sancho’s current deal, which is due to expire this summer. The move would help ensure that the club can demand a significant transfer fee if they decide to sell him.

This decision is designed to prevent the 24-year-old from leaving for free or at a heavily reduced price, something that would represent a major financial loss on the club’s initial £73m investment. Even though the England international has struggled to rediscover his top form since his 2021 arrival from Borussia Dortmund, club executives view maintaining his market value as essential.

By extending his contract, United would hold a stronger position in any transfer negotiations with interested clubs who might otherwise hope to sign the winger for a bargain fee following his inconsistent loan performances.

Possible Dortmund comeback on Sancho’s radar

Reports from Germany indicate that Sancho is keen on securing a permanent move back to Borussia Dortmund, the club where he first made his name. Sporting director Lars Ricken is said to be aware of Sancho’s wish to return to Signal Iduna Park for a third spell.

However, Dortmund’s management is reportedly assessing whether Sancho can return to the elite level of performance he showed during his first stint in the Bundesliga.

The situation is complicated further by Manchester United’s valuation. Although Sancho sees a move back to the Westfalenstadion as the ideal opportunity to revive his career, United’s insistence on a substantial transfer fee could become a major obstacle. The German club may hesitate to pay a high price for a player whose form and reputation have dipped sharply over the past two seasons.

Loan spell at Aston Villa fails to impress

Sancho’s loan move to Aston Villa has done little to silence his critics or prove that he can return to his previous levels. Under manager Unai Emery, the winger has struggled to secure consistent playing time, starting only nine Premier League matches.

His contribution has been modest, managing just one goal during his stint in the Midlands. Despite Aston Villa’s memorable Europa League triumph over Freiburg — their first major trophy in 30 years — Sancho’s involvement was limited to a brief nine-minute appearance as a late substitute in the final.

Turkish clubs monitoring Sancho’s situation

With a return to Germany appearing uncertain, the Manchester City academy product could find a route out through the Turkish Super Lig. Major clubs including Fenerbahce, Besiktas, and Galatasaray have reportedly shown interest in bringing him in to strengthen their attacking options.

Speculation suggests that Sancho has already engaged in preliminary discussions in Istanbul about a possible move, as he looks for a fresh start away from the Premier League.
