Vinicius Junior has come under fire in Spain after being absent from the emotional farewell ceremony for Dani Carvajal and David Alaba, both of whom are leaving Real Madrid.
The Spanish daily Marca described the Brazilian forward’s absence as "disrespectful" and suggested it reflects deeper issues within the team’s current atmosphere.
According to the publication, Vinicius Junior’s behaviour is "another clear indication of the unrest inside the squad." While Carvajal was bidding an emotional goodbye to the Santiago Bernabéu crowd after years of loyal service, reports claim that the Brazilian star was already enjoying time by the beach.
Marca also made a cutting remark, implying that Vinicius had already switched to holiday mode, prioritising preparations for the upcoming World Cup with Brazil under coach Carlo Ancelotti over club matters.
A season without trophies as Carvajal and Alaba bow out
Carvajal featured for the last time in Real Madrid colours on Saturday during a 4-2 victory against Athletic Bilbao. The full-back was visibly emotional as he addressed the supporters in his farewell speech. Over 13 years at the club, he made 451 appearances and collected 27 trophies, marking one of the most successful careers in the club’s modern history.
Alaba, whose contract expires at the end of the season, is also leaving. The Austrian defender joined from Bayern Munich in 2021 and lifted two Champions League trophies during his tenure in Madrid.
Despite their illustrious contributions, both players end the 2023/24 campaign without adding new silverware. Real Madrid lost the LaLiga crown to rivals FC Barcelona, suffered an early Copa del Rey exit at the hands of second-division Albacete, were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals, and also fell short in the Supercopa against Barça. As Marca summarised, "The Madrid of old, steeped in tradition, bids farewell amid applause, while the Madrid that squandered this season continues to spiral inward."
