It is incredibly convenient and secure; however, users occasionally encounter a significant issue—specifically, a sudden reduction in their UPI transaction limit. Who Determines Your UPI Limit?

UPI limits are not determined by a single entity; rather, they are established across three distinct levels. First, there are the guidelines set by the banking regulator (NPCI); second, your own bank sets limits based on its specific policies; and third, the individual UPI app you use (such as PhonePe, Google Pay, or Paytm) may have its own separate limits. It is important to note that these restrictions fall into two categories: first, the maximum amount you can send in a single instance (the "per-transaction cap"); and second, the total aggregate amount you can transfer over the course of an entire day (the "per-day cap").

Why Do Limits Drop Suddenly?

If your limit has suddenly decreased, the primary reason is likely your "transaction behavior" (your pattern of financial transactions). The bank's automated system constantly monitors your account for security purposes. If you repeatedly enter an incorrect UPI PIN, experience frequent transaction failures, or if the system detects any suspicious activity, your transaction limit is immediately lowered to protect you from potential fraud. Additionally, limits may be temporarily reduced due to bank server maintenance, technical glitches, or updates to the banking application.

How Can You Restore Your Limit?

The good news is that these restrictions are not permanent. For security reasons, most such restrictions are automatically lifted after a specific period (such as 24 hours), and the limit reverts to its normal state. During this waiting period, the system verifies that your account remains secure. If the limit does not reset automatically, you can contact your bank's customer care service or submit a request to increase the limit through your banking app.

How to Avoid This Inconvenience?

To avoid these sudden restrictions, keep a few simple points in mind. Never enter an incorrect PIN repeatedly, and refrain from forcing through transactions that are consistently failing. Always keep your banking and UPI apps updated to the latest versions. Ensure that all your essential account details (KYC) are kept up to date, and try to maintain a consistent transaction pattern so that the bank's security system does not flag your activity as suspicious.
