FIFA has approved Iran’s request to shift its 2026 World Cup training base from the United States to Mexico, following security and logistical concerns linked to regional instability. The Iranian Football Federation had originally planned to set up its camp in Arizona, but after careful consideration, sought an alternative location in Mexico.

FIFA formally endorses relocation of Iran's base camp

The Iran Football Federation confirmed that FIFA, the global football governing body, has officially authorised the change of the national team’s World Cup training base. Team Melli, which was scheduled to train in Tucson, Arizona, will now establish its headquarters in Tijuana, Mexico, just across the border.

As reported by the Associated Press, federation president Mehdi Taj announced the decision after several rounds of negotiations. He described the move as a pragmatic step considering the evolving geopolitical scenario and the security risks associated with the team’s planned stay in the United States during the expanded 48-team World Cup.

Security concerns prompt exit from Arizona

The decision to abandon Tucson’s Kino Sports Complex stemmed primarily from heightened concerns over safety due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Officials from the federation and security experts expressed growing unease about potential disruptions or risks to the delegation while on American soil.

By shifting operations to Tijuana, located just south of San Diego, the federation aims to ensure a safer and more controlled environment for the squad. Preparations for the new base are already underway, with the federation confirming that the site “includes all training facilities, gymnasium, private dining areas, and every required amenity for the team.”

Statements from the Iranian Football Federation

Federation president Mehdi Taj elaborated on the extensive diplomatic discussions that took place to finalise the move. In an official statement released through the federation’s media department, Taj detailed the procedural steps undertaken to ensure compliance with FIFA’s regulations.

“All team base camps for participating countries in the World Cup must receive FIFA approval,” Taj explained. “Fortunately, after submitting our requests and holding meetings with FIFA and World Cup authorities in Istanbul, along with a recent online meeting in Tehran with the FIFA Secretary General, our request to shift the team’s base from the United States to Mexico was officially approved.”

Logistical benefits and World Cup scheduling

In addition to improved security, relocating to Tijuana offers logistical advantages for Iran’s Group G campaign. The team will face New Zealand and Belgium in Inglewood, California, before travelling to Seattle to take on Egypt. The close distance between Tijuana and Los Angeles is expected to simplify travel arrangements for the team’s early fixtures.

Moreover, the federation highlighted that the move could ease visa and travel-related challenges. Taj mentioned that the national side “might even be able to use Iran Air flights for travel to and from Mexico.” The shift marks a significant adjustment for Iran, which will make its fourth consecutive World Cup appearance, as the team looks to advance beyond the group stage for the first time in its history.
