The Premier League has announced Bruno Fernandes as the winner of the 2025/26 Player of the Season award.
The Manchester United skipper delivered an outstanding season, guiding the club to a third-place finish and securing their return to the UEFA Champions League.
Fernandes made history this season by recording 20 assists, equalling the all-time record for most assists in a single campaign. This record was first set by Arsenal icon Thierry Henry and later matched by former Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne.
The Portuguese midfielder becomes the 27th different player to receive this honour since the award’s introduction in the 1994/95 season, which was first claimed by Alan Shearer. The award is determined through a combination of votes from the public, the 20 club captains, and a panel of football experts.
Five players have won the Premier League Player of the Season twice: Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidic, Kevin De Bruyne, and Mo Salah. Among them, Ronaldo is the only player to have achieved consecutive wins, doing so in 2007 and 2008. Juninho remains the only player to have won the award while playing for a relegated team, achieving the feat with Middlesbrough in the 1996/97 campaign.
Fernandes is the seventh Manchester United player to claim this award and the first since Vidic in 2010/11. This marks the ninth time a Manchester United player has been recognised, the highest total for any Premier League club.
At 31, Fernandes also secured the Football Writers’ Association’s Player of the Year award, marking the 17th instance of a player winning both accolades in the same season.
